Research Postgrad

Welcome

We have a large and growing postgraduate community of over thirty research students in addition to students following our taught MA programmes. If you are interested in pursuing postgraduate studies by research there are a number of different choices so please take some time to look over these pages and come talk to us to see which are the best options for you.

In the Department of Sociology you can choose to pursue a two year supervised research degree leading to an MLitt or a four year supervised research degree leading to a PhD. Part-time postgraduate research is also possible. Further information can be found in our graduate studies brochure

From September 2010 all PhD students in the Department will follow a structured PhD programme which means they will take some taught modules alongside other PhD students as well as pursuing their own individual research project under the supervision of a staff member. For an outline of the structured PhD programme please see the Graduate studies pages for the Sociology department.

Your first port of call in the Department is the postgraduate research coordinator. They will be able to inform you who might be the best person to talk to about your particular area of interest. In the year 2012/13 the research coordinator is Dr. Rebecca King Ó Riain.

Read a quick overview of the Department's approach. While details of programmes change often, our basic philosophy has remained quite consistent. If you seek more detailed information read the Research Postgraduate Handbook 2012-13. You can also check frequently asked questions about our progamme here
