Professional Career to Date

Having graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1986 (B.A. (Hons) Economics and Sociology), I worked abroad for three years. On return to Ireland I worked for fifteen years in social justice campaigning groups (from 1991 – 1998 I was the Assistant General Secretary, National Organisation of the Unemployed and from 1998 – 2001 I was the National Social Policy Officer, Society of St Vincent De Paul). I represented antipoverty interests in national policy institutions including National Economic and Social Council, National Economic and Social Forum and other national social partnership policy processes. I also served a term (2003-2008) as a Councillor in Dublin City Council where I chaired the Housing community and Social Affairs committee and was a member of the Corporate Policy Group. In 2002 I was awarded a Combat Poverty Agency PHD Scholarship and graduated in 2006 with a PhD - ‘Domestic Constraints on Globalisation: A Case study of Irish Social Security Policy 1986-2006’, School of Law and Government, Dublin City University

Research Interests

Primarily working in the field of political sociology, my research interests include globalisation and welfare states, political economy and models of development, the politics of redistribution, power and civil society and gender issues relating to social security and labour market activation. Active research work includes membership of a SANPAD Research Team working on South Africa as a Developmental State, work as the Irish National Expert with the European Network of Experts on Gender and Social Inclusion (EGGSI). In 2011 I was appointed by government to the National Advisory Group on Taxation and Social Welfare.

I continue to be an active advocate for social justice and equality and am a regular media contributor on such issues. A significant part of my active research activity is action research and carried out through civil society and public engagement commitments with groups working in collective collaboration to develop alternative understandings of political economy and systems of governance. To this end I am on the Central Committee of Claiming Our Future, a member and of the Advisory Council of TASC a think tank for action on social change and participate in other civil society initiatives.

  • See below for previous research work and participation in research committees and policy processes.
