BCI funds research on broadcasting, migration and diversity

Broadcasting Commission of Ireland research award to Media Studies and Sociology

Dr Gavan Titley, Subject Leader for Media Studies in NUIM, Dr Rebecca King O’Riain and Dr Aphra Kerr (Department of Sociology) has been awarded project funding in the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland’s new Research Funding Scheme. The research team will conduct an 18-24 month project entitled “Irish broadcasting and the ‘New Ireland’; mapping and visioning cultural diversity”. The research project will examine how Irish broadcasters are responding to migration and cultural diversity, and aims to map out different forms of policy response across areas of media production. A central aspect of the research will be an engagement with Polish, Chinese and Nigerian viewers and listeners, the first such study of this kind in Ireland. The project is part of the ongoing research into the knowledge society within the Department of Sociology.

Commenting on the announcement, Chief Executive of the BCI, Michael O’Keeffe, said: “There were some very highly detailed research proposals among the entries. Research is a vital tool in enabling the Commission to carry out its remit and we are committed to the principle of multi-annual funding for research projects. Following a review of the progress of research projects during this first year, we would look towards further development of the structure of the Scheme during the second year and would encourage industry applicants to put forward proposals in the year ahead,” Mr O’Keeffe added.

As part of the selection process, an external expert panel was convened to assess the applications, focusing on the quality and structure of the applications, the compatibility of proposed research to the stated aims and objectives of the BCI, as well as the level of knowledge to be gained from each of the proposed projects.

The BCI is an independent statutory organisation responsible for a number of key areas of activity with regard to television and radio services in Ireland.
